Silo brought good bread to Canberra, and while good bakeries are no longer so scarce in the capital, Silo still shines above the rest, particulary with its addictive stirato loaf. But the drawcard here is not only the bread; this is also where you go for a really good lunch. Silo is not afraid of offal, and will even have tripe on the menu, along with fish soup and other rustic delicacies, plus well-picked wines, decent coffee and very good cheese from its cheese room. And there’s one more secret here: the custard tarts, either plain or topped with sticky prunes or loads of redcurrants. Buy one to take home.
