Wellington Caves

One of the largest stalagmites in the world (32 metres in circumference and 15 metres high) can be viewed in Cathedral Cave, one of the limestone caves near Wellington. Visitors must descend 12 metres into Cathedral Cave to view this phenomenon called Altar Rock. Also at the Wellington Caves, Bone Cave (not open to the public) has revealed ancient animal fossils including a giant kangaroo and carnivorous goanna. The cave openings acted as an animal trap; in fact, George Ranken, the man who discovered this cave in 1830, did so by accidentally falling into it.
