Though just next door to Orange, the Cowra region has a warmer climate, and the vines are exposed to warm winds that blow across the plains from Central Australia. These conditions best suit chardonnay, the area’s main wine. The vineyards surround the towns of Cowra and Canowindra, stretching out beside grazing properties in low river valleys. Cowra Estate (Boorowa Rd, Cowra, (02) 6342 3650) is the area’s oldest winery, established in 1973, while Windowrie Estate has its cellar door in an old flour mill (Vaux St, Cowra, (02) 6341 4141).
