This picnic and camping area is located in Ophir Recreation Area, which happens to be the site of Australia’s first significant gold discovery. You can still see traces of the mine workings; in fact, you can relive the era and try your hand at fossicking. If that’s not your thing, you can fish for trout instead, or stretch your legs on a walking track. The reserve is 30 km north-east of Orange via Ophir Rd or Ponds Rd. Camper trailers and caravans not recommended. Bring your own drinking water and firewood.
