CSIRO Parkes Observatory

The observatory’s giant telescope helped relay telemetry and television pictures of the first moon  landing and featured in the movie The Dish. The visitors centre has displays and interactive exhibits about its famous telescope. There are fees for watching the astronomy-related shows in the two theatres, but entry to the visitors centre is free. Interesting note: the town of Parkes is named after Sir  Henry Parkes, who is often called the Father of Australia’s Federation. His face appears on the $5 note.
