A 3-hectare island known as Bat Island is found in the Bellinger River, and is home to a colony of up to 40 000 grey-headed flying foxes. Black flying foxes and little red flying foxes can occasionally be seen here too. At dusk, the bats set off in search of food, filling the sky to spectacular effect. Visitors arriving at this time are advised to wear hats. The best time to visit the island (accessed via the caravan park) is September to March.
