Tucked in behind sand dunes and ringed with heath and woodland, Hungry Gate is an attractive camping area just a hop, skip and jump from the ocean. It’s 5 km south of Hat Head village – follow Hungry Rd off The Gap Rd. Bring your own firewood and water. There’s a recycling station here, but it’s best to take your garbage with you.

This campsite is located in Hat Head National Park

This is a stunning slice of northern NSW coastline, complete with pristine beaches, rocky headlands, melaleuca wetlands, freshwater lagoons and forest. In case you’re not moved by the promise of swimming, surfing, fishing, birdwatching and walking, there’s also the chance to see migrating southern right whales May–July and Aug–Oct.
