Lake Cawndilla camping area
On Lake Dr off Old Pooncarie Rd, this camping area is right on the lake’s foreshore, which offers beautiful early-morning or late-evening views. Following years of drought that saw the lake dry out, it is now full again, so the views from the shore, through the drowned river red gums, is as special as ever. Birdlife is abundant and watching the sun set over this oasis in the outback is something not to be missed. Note: it’s 2WD access in dry weather only.

This campsite is located in Kinchega National Park
Kinchega National Park hugs the southern end of the fascinating Menindee Lakes system, which after rain becomes a haven for waterbirds. Visitors can fish or swim when the lakes are full, or explore the region’s rich Aboriginal and European history. The Old Kinchega Woolshed still stands here and interpretive signs give a fascinating insight into the pastoral history of the area, as do the ruins of the old homestead nearby. The national park is 5 km south of Menindee and 110 km south-east of Broken Hill. Note: access roads are closed when wet, and a total fire ban is in place annually from 31 Oct – 1 Mar. Carry in your own firewood and drinking water.
