Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre

The Snowy Hydro-electric Scheme has been hailed as a great, modern civil engineering feat. Construction began in 1949 and took 25 years to complete. The scheme diverts water from the mountains and then sends it through power stations to generate energy. The water is then released into the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers to provide extensive irrigation. The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre has a comprehensive exhibition hall and two theatres showing short films about the scheme throughout the day. Visitors can also tour the power stations at Talbingo and on the Alpine Way (10 kilometres east of Khancoban).
