    Introduction

Small but spectacular, Budderoo National Park in the Southern Highlands is notable for its outstanding Minnamurra Rainforest and centre, its sandstone plateau country, sparkling waterfalls and superb views. The plateau provides great walks with shrubby heath, patches of woodland, eucalypt forests and expansive views to the Illawarra coast. Fragments of rainforest thrive in sheltered aspects below the cliff lines. The park’s wildlife includes many nocturnal species, including the brown antechinus and various bats. Birds include gang-gang cockatoos, yellow-tailed black-cockatoos, the threatened eastern bristlebird and nectar-seeking honeyeaters. In Minnamurra Rainforest – a lush, moist environment of subtropical and warm temperate species – majestic buttressed trees are draped in strangler fi gs and epiphytic orchids, and ferns and mosses cling to towering tree trunks. Observant walkers may see or hear the superb lyrebird scratching in the forest’s leaf litter, or glimpse an eastern water dragon warming itself in the sun. Minnamurra Rainforest Centre (open daily) features informative displays and a raised boardwalk (partly accessible to wheelchairs) through the rainforest canopy. Allow about an hour for the Rainforest Loop Walk (1.6 km). Another highlight is the dramatic Carrington Falls (there are three lookouts), where the Kangaroo River plunges over the escarpment. Walking tracks include the Warris Chair Lookout Track (1 km return, easy) where you can gaze across Kangaroo Valley, and Missingham Lookout Track (3.8 km, easy) for views over Carrington Falls Gorge.
