Cockatoo Island

This amazing spot, in the middle of Sydney Harbour, only opened up for public camping in 2008. For around the cost of lunch in one of the nearby expensive hotels, you can enjoy a peaceful spot on the harbour and wake to see the sun rise behind the Harbour Bridge. You can bring all your own camping gear or hire a tent, mattress, chairs and a lantern when you book. There are coin-operated barbecues on which to cook and solar-heated showers. To get there, catch a ferry from Wharf Five at Circular Quay or water taxi. Guided tours of the historic island take place on Sundays.
