Jerilderie
Town
Population 769
Jerilderie is an important merino stud area, but is better known for its links with the Kelly Gang. In 1879 the gang captured the police, held the townspeople hostage for two days, cut the telegraph wires and robbed the bank. It was here that Kelly handed over the famous Jerilderie Letter, justifying his actions and voicing his disrespect for police, whom he called 'a parcel of big ugly fat-necked wombat-headed, big-bellied, magpie-legged, narrow-hipped, splay-footed sons of Irish bailiffs or English landlords'. The town of Jerilderie is now the gateway to the Kidman Way, an 800-kilometre outback highway.
