Starting at the town of Katherine, it’s possible to kayak along the Katherine River for up to 60 kilometres downstream, which will take you around a week to complete. The river is flooded by wet-season rains, but there are also many hot water springs and soaks that flow out of the ground and feed the river during the long dry season. There are long sections of deep pools followed by small sections of rapids where the river descends. You’ll pass through rocky banks, paperbark forests, small rapids and pandanus channels. Sometimes the pandanus tree branches reach out to each other from either side of the river. You’ll find beautiful bush campsites that make camping overnight by the side of the river a joy.
