Watarrka National Park This park encompasses the western reaches of the rugged George Gill Range, as well as many rock holes and gorges that provide a refuge from the harsh conditions for many species of plants and animals. The great attraction is Kings Canyon, an enormous amphitheatre with sheer sandstone walls rising to 270 m. The 870 m Carmichael Crag is known for its majestic colours, which are particularly vibrant at sunset. There are well-signed trails. The Rim Walk is a boardwalk through prehistoric cycads in the lush Garden of Eden and takes in unusual rock formations such as the Lost City. There are wonderful views across the canyon. The Kings Creek Walk is a 1 hr return walk along the canyon floor. The 6 km (3–4 hr) Kings Canyon Walk is rough going and recommended only for experienced walkers. Tours of the park include Aboriginal tours and scenic flights; brochures available from visitor centre; (08) 8951 8211.
Kings Creek Station: working cattle and camel station with campsites and accommodation. Quad (4-wheeled motorcycle), helicopter and camel tours of the area; 36 km SE. Mereenie Loop: links Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, Uluru and Kata Tjuta via the West MacDonnell Ranges and Glen Helen. Permit required because a section of the route passes through Aboriginal land; map and permit from visitor centre.
