Larapinta Trail - West MacDonnell National Park
Hiking and walking
This 223‑kilometre Larapinta Trail runs along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges, from the old Telegraph Station just north of Alice Springs to Mount Sonder in the west. It is divided into 12 sections, with many walkers choosing to do just one or a few sections at a time (the entire trail takes about two weeks). Sections featuring some classic West MacDonnells scenery include the three-day walk from Simpsons Gap to Standley Chasm across ridges and into a gorge, and the 16‑kilometre-return journey to 1380-metre Mount Sonder, where the views extend to Haasts Bluff.
