Mareeba was the first town settled on the Atherton Tableland by pastoralist John Atherton in 1877. The town was once famous for its tobacco production, which began in the 1950s but was deregulated only a few years ago. Today, the area produces mangoes, coffee and sugarcane – industries that have thrived with the influx of migrants. The morning balloon flights over the tableland are spectacular.
