Several hundred kilometres west of Toowoomba on the way to the outback is Queensland’s oldest wine relic, Romavilla (77–83 Northern Rd, Roma, (07) 4622 1822). The winery consists of an old timber and corrugated iron building with underground cellars for storage. It has been in continuous production since 1863 and the highlights are the fantastic fortified wines such as rose black muscat and madeira, made from riesling and rare Syrian grapes. If you can’t make it to Roma, then you can enjoy a piece of history via mail order.
