Longreach

Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, Courtesy of Tourism Queensland

Population 2977

Longreach is the largest town in central-west Queensland. Lying on the Tropic of Capricorn, this 'boom and bust' country is affected by flooding rains and devastating drought. It epitomises the outback and features the renowned Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, devoted to the outback hero. In 1922 Longreach became the operational base for Qantas and remained so until 1934. The world's first Flying Surgeon Service started from here in 1959. Longreach is bisected by the Thompson River, the vast length of which is this town's namesake.
