Muttaburra
Town
Population 106
Despite being a tiny outback community, Muttaburra has much to promote in its history. Famous cattle duffer Harry Redford (Captain Starlight) planned his daring robbery at nearby Bowen Downs Station in 1870. He stole 1000 head of cattle (thinking they wouldn't be missed) and drove them 2400 kilometres into South Australia. He was arrested and tried; the jury acquitted him, probably because his daring was so admired. These events were the basis for Rolf Boldrewood's novel Robbery Under Arms. More recently, a skeleton of an unknown dinosaur was found in 1963 in a creek close to the Thomson River. It was named Muttaburrasaurus. A replica can be seen in Bruford Street.
