Heron Island Resort
A true coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, this resort is world renowned for its diving, with more than 30 sites, and for its birds. Heron is a World Heritage–listed Marine National Park, where all flora and fauna is protected, so birds rule here. Some guests take a few hours to adapt to the birds’ noisy and, it must be said, somewhat pungent presence. Accommodation is luxurious, ranging from rooms to suites and a beach house. Children under 12 stay free and eat free at buffets, and there’s a Junior Rangers program for seven to 12-year olds.
