This camping area is next to Pandanus Creek at Jaxut, about 200 m past the old forest station. Access is via the Cathu–O’Connell River Rd, a very steep road suitable for small caravans and camper trailers only. Campers should bring firewood and water, or treat/boil the tap water provided. Cathu State Forest is known as a particularly good location for birdwatching, with more than 100 species inhabiting the area.

Take a scenic drive to the Clarke Range Lookout, enjoy a relaxing bush picnic or simply sit back and enjoy views of the Whitsunday islands – Cathu State Forest has much to offer campers and daytrippers. Cathu is 72 km north of Mackay or 51 km south of Proserpine, and Jaxut is 12 km off the Bruce Hwy.
