This tranquil camping area lies at the edge of Moonlight Dam, 70 km south-west of Mackay. There are few facilities besides pit toilets and tap water (treat or boil before drinking), but it offers spectacular wildlife-watching as birds descend on the dam at dusk to drink. To get here, head north 6 km along the Peak Downs Hwy from Nebo, turn left onto Nebo–Glenden Rd, then right onto Turrawulla Rd, and follow this to the signed intersection for Moonlight Dam. Moonlight Dam is a designated campsite on the Mackay Highlands Great Walk and is 16.2 km from Denham Range camping area (Crediton State Forest) and 5.5 km to the Great Walk entry at Mt Britton.

How to book: NPRSR 13 7468 www.nprsr.qld.gov.au Permits: camping permit required

This campsite is located in Mackay Highlands Great Walk

This 56 km, 3–5 day walk allows experienced and self-sufficent hikers to see everything from rugged cliffs and cool rainforests to open eucalypt woodland and an 1880s gold-mining hamlet. Some sections of the track require a high level of physical fitness, and the track is easier to manage if approached north to south, from Pine Grove in Eungella National Park to Mt Britton township. Advance bookings are required for all camping on the walk.
