South Beach camping area (boat-based camping)
This campground on the south-east coast has no facilities and suits self-sufficient campers only. Generators and open fires are not permitted: bring everything necessary. Note: the reefs and waters surrounding Orpheus Island National Park are protected within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, so check for permission before boating or fishing.

The caves, headlands and rock formations in Orpheus Island National Park, 110 km north of Townsville and 45 km east of Ingham, have been a source of fascination for geologists for many years. The park offers picturesque picnic and day-use areas, superb wildlife-watching and lovely camping areas. The closest boat ramp is at Taylors Beach, 25 km from Ingham, and charter boat access is from Dungeness (Lucinda), 23 km to the north-west. Advance bookings are required for camping.
