National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide
This amazing assemblage of rail craft is designed for serious train enthusiasts, but it includes fun, interactive exhibits for kids. There’s a Tea and Sugar Train where kids can board, get their ‘pay’ from the banking carriage, chat with the butcher in the butcher van, and shop in the provision store. In the Relay Brake Van they can pretend to be really taking a ride, sleep in the bunks, and cook and picnic in the kitchen. There’s also a model railway. Take a few safety precautions here – be sure kids don’t climb on roofs, running boards or tenders, or enter areas that are chained off. Also watch out for large gaps between trains and platforms, and be prepared for high, dangerous steps into cabs. Train rides are available and are included in the entry fee.
