Adelaide Plains

This hot, dry and commonly overlooked wine region lies on the coastal plains north of Adelaide and west of Gawler. Many of the wineries have an Italian influence. Primo Estate (McMurtrie Rd, McLaren Vale, (08) 8323 6800) is the region’s leader, making colombard, shiraz, botrytis riesling and, best of all, cabernet merlot under its Joseph label – the wine also incorporates grapes from the Coonawarra. While other wineries don’t have cellar doors, look out for bottles from Ceravolo Wines, Diloreto Wines and Dominic Versace Wines in shops. Dominic Versace grows grapes free of chemicals and uses minimal technology in the winemaking process.
