There are ample opportunities for kayaking on the Fleurieu Peninsula in the waters near the holiday town of Victor Harbor. Close to the town is Granite Island Recreation Park, a large island that is linked to the mainland by a 600-metre-long jetty. The island is home to a little penguin colony and you can join a nocturnal tour to view these small creatures as they come in from the water at night. There are sheltered waters between the island and the mainland for beginners, while more experienced kayakers can circumnavigate the island. You can also paddle in Encounter Bay, where you might spot dolphins, penguins or seals, and out to Wright Island. There are also sheltered waters in Encounter Lakes.
