Joined to the Victor Harbor township by a 630‑metre causeway is Granite Island. The island has a little penguin population of around 2000; take a ranger-guided tour at twilight to see them returning to their burrows after a day’s fishing ((08) 8552 7555). During winter and early spring, a handful of southern right whales visit Victor Harbor’s Encounter Bay and are often spotted from the town’s headlands. The South Australian Whale Centre (Railway Terrace, (08) 8551 0750) has interpretive displays on the 25 species of whales and dolphins found in southern waters. Phone the Whale Information Hotline (1900 931 223) for details of whale sightings in season.
