Magnificent arid highlands in the far north of the Flinders Ranges are home to a much-loved wilderness sanctuary, famous for its striking peaks and gorges. A geological marvel, Arkaroola is ideal for bushwalking, photography and 4WD exploring. As well as motel accommodation and caravan park sites, there is also bush camping along Wywhyana Creek. Located 129 km north-east of Copley, the campground is 30 km north of Balcanoona along the Arkaroola–Balcanoona Rd. Check road conditions before travelling and come equipped for self-sufficient camping.

There are many walking tracks, lookouts and 4WD tracks throughout Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, and to get the best from a visit you should plan to stay for at least a few days.

While the tag-along Ridgetop 4WD tour is best known, another great day out, and a challenging drive at times, is the Echo Camp Back Track. Keys to the gates and a guide are available from the visitor centre for a fee.

The bush camping along Wywhyana Creek is pleasant, with well separated sites, and you can still drive up for dinner at the restaurant and use the showers and laundry at the caravan park.
