At this popular watering hole almost halfway along the Birdsville Track, you’ll also find motel-style rooms and good no-frills camping beside the Derwent River. Permanent water means there are shade trees and a lively local bird population to observe, as well as a pool fed by hot artesian water to soak in. The Mungerannie Hotel is 205 km north of Marree and 315 km south of Birdsville.

This campsite is located in Birdsville Track

An outback icon covering 520 km, this once infamous track was founded in the 1860s for droving cattle from Queensland to the railhead at Marree. Over the years it’s been a legendary mail route and now, with major improvements, it’s a popular tourist trail to the gateway town of Birdsville. In dry weather the route is navigable by conventional vehicles, though travellers need to be well equipped and prepared for long stretches in remote, challenging terrain.
