Flinders Ranges National Park
Hiking and walking
Wilpena Pound is the setting for many great bushwalks, most leading from the resort. The most challenging is the hike up 1168-metre St Mary Peak on the northern edge of the pound (17 kilometres return). From the top, walkers can see the shimmering, usually dry Lake Torrens on the horizon, and the Heysen and ABC ranges twisting away to the north. Other routes to the top of the pound cross Mount Ohlssen Bagge (4 kilometres return), or pass Rawnsley Bluff on the southern rim from Rawnsley Park Station. For a gentle amble outside the pound, there is the walk through Bunyeroo Gorge.
