Gawler Ranges National Park

Gawler Ranges National Park, a remote wilderness of red volcanic rocks and stark, white salt lakes, is located above the Eyre Peninsula. The wildflower displays are famous, and there is a spectacular range of animals: lesser and greater long-eared bats, hopping mice, pygmy possums, and birds such as the rufous treecreeper. Along with nearby Nullarbor National Park, this is one of the best places to see the southern hairy-nosed wombat. Look for them around Pondanna Outstation, especially at night when they emerge from their burrows (though they occasionally make daylight appearances in winter).
