Warraweena Conservation Park
This onetime sheep station has been given a new lease on life as a privately run wilderness sanctuary. The accommodation in the homestead and re-worked shearer’s quarters is seriously rustic, with a wood-fired hot water system, salvaged materials and bare-bones sleeping quarters. Yet everything works and the cobbled-together decor adds an authentic touch to this lonely outpost. There’s wildlife and down-to-earth history here, not to mention some of the most engaging and little-trodden terrain in the Flinders Ranges. For the knockabout four-wheel-drive traveller, it doesn’t get much better than this.
