Mount Remarkable National Park
Hiking and walking
The summit of 963-metre Mount Remarkable can be reached from Melrose in the west, Alligator Gorge in the north or Mambray Creek in the south. Many of the trails link up, allowing endless route options for a half-day, full-day or multiple-day walk. From Blue Gum Flat, you can walk upstream to the start of Alligator Creek; the red gorge walls narrow to just 3 metres apart in one section, and the gorge is lined with ferns and native pines. From the end of the creek, climb up onto Battery Ridge for great views and then loop back via a fire trail for a total of 12 kilometres. Another option is the walk from Mambray Creek to Alligator Gorge (14 kilometres), with a possible diversion to Hidden Gorge.
