This is Australia’s best region for riesling, and a very good region for shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Vineyards are sprawled over the gently undulating country between Auburn and Clare, with historic stone buildings dotting the landscape. Jesuit priests established Sevenhill Cellars (College Rd, Sevenhill, (08) 8843 4222) in 1851 to ensure a steady supply of altar wine. The winemaking is still overseen by Jesuits, with riesling and shiraz the standout varieties. Visit the stone cellars and St Aloysius Church. The well-known brand Annie’s Lane (Quelltaler Rd, Watervale, (08) 8843 2204) was also established in 1851 (under a different name), and produces excellent riesling, semillon, shiraz and grenache mourvedre. Other impressive wineries include Grosset (King St, Auburn, (08) 8849 2175) and Wendouree (Wendouree Rd, Clare, (08) 8842 2896). The Clare Gourmet Weekend is held each May.
