Colin Thiele’s classic book Storm Boy is set in the Coorong, just south of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Read this beautiful story with your children before you visit. The main characters are a young boy, a pelican and their Aboriginal friend. The Coorong is still a lonely, wild landscape of lagoons and sand dunes, a place for finding waterbirds and learning more about Aboriginal culture. You can go for a walk, or take a cruise on the Spirit of the Coorong, (08) 8555 2203; coorongcruises.com.au.
