A booming 25 per cent of all Australian grapes are grown in Riverland. Yet, the region is slowly attempting to alter its reputation, focusing on quality as well as quantity. Banrock Station (Holmes Rd, Kingston-on-Murray, (08) 8583 0299), whose inexpensive wines are some of the region’s better drops, is also helping to protect the Murray environment. On the 1700-hectare property, only 240 hectares are vines, the rest is a restored wetland and sanctuary for birds, fish and frogs. Other wineries to visit are Angove’s (Bookmark Ave, Renmark, (08) 8580 3100), Kingston Estate (cnr Sturt Hwy and East Tce, Kingstonon- Murray, (08) 8583 0500) and Organic Vignerons Australia (Section 395, Derrick Rd, Loxton North, (08) 8541 3616), which represents organic vineyards in Loxton and Waikerie, as well as others across the state.
