Downtown

Downtown Hobart is centred on the intersection of Elizabeth and Liverpool streets. There are fashion and department stores, specialty shops, banks, cafes and restaurants in the surrounding streets and arcades. Shops are open Monday to Saturday until 5pm, and on Sundays the larger stores open 10am to 4pm.

Elizabeth Mall

Surrounded by shops and cafes, this busy meeting place is a favourite with shoppers, young people and buskers. A visitor information booth is open in the mall on weekdays until 4.30pm and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays.

Cat and Fiddle Arcade

There are several shopping arcades in the main retail area of Hobart, but the Cat and Fiddle Arcade’s nursery rhyme musical clock lends it a certain charm. Much to the delight of children, it plays ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ on the hour as moving parts provide accompanying action. The arcade runs between the Elizabeth Mall and Murray Street.

Liverpool Street

This is Hobart’s main downtown shopping strip, with interesting arcades and side streets. Bank Arcade (between Argyle and Elizabeth streets) will tempt you with breads, spices and tiny cafes. Mathers Lane and Criterion Street, further along towards Murray Street, will interest those with a taste for good coffee and all things retro.

Elizabeth Street

North of the mall, Elizabeth Street continues up a gentle slope towards North Hobart. In the first few blocks there is a cluster of shops selling polar fleece and outdoor equipment, followed by interesting cafes and antique shops.
