The capital of an island state, Hobart is a city of the sea. Views of the Derwent estuary appear around every corner, while the unmistakable smell of the ocean pervades the senses. Jetties, beaches and rocks on both sides of the river offer quality fishing. For swimming, good spots include Nutgrove at Sandy Bay and Hinsby Beach at Taroona. Good beaches on the other side of the river and beyond the suburbs are Seven Mile, Clifton and Carlton; Clifton and Carlton beaches are patrolled in summer, and Clifton has the best surf. A further 8 kilometres south of Clifton is Goat Bluff, with spectacular views of the wild and deserted coastline on either side.
