Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
Serving at various times as a rum distillery, contagious diseases hospital, home for ‘imperial lunatics’ and, most recently, as a fudge factory, this historic site was also a female prison for 50 years. The nearby Remembrance Garden was created in 1995. Visitors can take a tour of the site and have an 1830s-style ‘Morning Tea with the Matron’ in her refurbished cottage. 16 Degraves St, South Hobart; open 9am–4pm Mon–Fri; Morning Tea with the Matron bookings (03) 6223 1559; Mon, Wed and Fri.
