Cataract Gorge – Launceston

Before the South Esk and North Esk rivers join in Launceston to become the Tamar, the South Esk runs through Cataract Gorge. The milky brown river through Cataract Gorge has a fringe of craggy rock and eucalypts. From Kings Bridge, walking tracks wind along the cliffs on either side of the gorge down to a pool-shaped section of the river called First Basin, which is a good spot for swimming in summer. Here, you can cross a suspension bridge or use the chairlift and continue back along the other side.
