The largest sand dunes in the state are at Sandy Cape, but they are hard to get to and this unserviced camping ground on Tasmania’s remote west coast is only accessible by 4WD. Tracks in the area should be attempted by experienced drivers only, and you’ll need to check the track conditions and organise your Offroad Authority with the ranger at Arthur River before you head out. Access is via the Temma or Balfour 4WD track off the Western Explorer C249, 50 km south of Arthur River. The beach drive from Greenes Creek to Sandy Cape is rated hard due to quicksand and should not be attempted alone.
