Overland Track - Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park
Hiking and walking
The Overland Track is one of the world’s great walks, undertaken by around 9000 people every year, mainly between December and March. Hikers on the Overland Track will encounter panoramas of jagged peaks and deep glacial lakes, alpine moors, forests dripping with moss, spiky pandani plants and hills blazing with orange leaves in autumn. The 85‑kilometre hike takes five days, but side trips to areas like Mount Ossa are highly recommended. Walkers need to be well prepared, carrying food and a tent in case the basic huts are occupied. Alternatively, guided tours include catering and accommodation in luxury huts (visit www.cradlehuts.com.au).
