The historic 1872 Lucas Hotel is in the main street of Latrobe, part of the rich tapestry of a town that was the site of the first world woodchopping championship in 1891, and which is now home to the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame. The hotel has won awards for its restoration and is listed as part of the National Estate. The quiet, tastefully decorated rooms have ensuites and there’s also a honeymoon suite with a spa. Heritage outbuildings dating back to 1852 can be found in the well-maintained gardens, and the hotel’s resident platypus lives in the property’s creek.
