Suited to hardier travellers and affording unsurpassed access to Cradle Mountain’s magnificent alpine wilderness, these eight vertical-board huts are inside the national park at the starting point for Tasmania’s ultimate walking adventure – the 65-kilometre Overland Track south to Lake St Clair. Guests provide their own bedding for these rustic cabins, but they have good heating, bunk beds, gas cooking facilities, and toilets and showers in a shared separate amenities block. From the front door, wander through cool mossy rainforest, take the two-hour loop around Dove Lake or stroll to nearby Waldheim Chalet, now a museum dedicated to the park’s far-sighted pioneer Gustav Weindorfer. Alternatively, gear up and head out to Marion’s Lookout or Cradle Mountain’s craggy summit.
