A step up from pub fare, this is the only other place in town to get an evening meal. The Kauri Bistro is a roomy space topped by an exposed timber ceiling, giving the impression of being in a giant log cabin. Although kauri trees are not one of Tasmania’s local species, most of the food on offer here is. From the region to the west of Smithton – the ‘Edge of the World’ as they call it – comes seafood, beef, lamb, organic chicken and crisp vegetables. Complement a serving of beautifully prepared steak or trevalla fillet with a glass of Tasmanian wine, but save room for one of their lovely desserts.
