Head down to the wharf end of Alexander Terrace to discover Stanley’s best-kept secret: here, under the spiky legs of a giant red crayfish, is Hurseys Seafoods, reputed to be one of Tasmania’s best seafood eateries. It’s certainly one of the freshest, with a dozen or more varieties of live fish and shellfish in huge seawater tanks ready and waiting for you to make your selection. The lunchtime cafe downstairs sells fish and chips, abalone patties and crayfish salads, while upstairs in the restaurant you can sit down for dinner at a gingham-clad table in the enclosed balcony to enjoy waterside views and great seafood. Try the flathead – one of Tasmania’s most underrated species – which they do here in a delicious riesling sauce.
