By the time the first hotel was built on this site, miners had not only discovered rich and rare minerals at Mount Bischoff, but it was also Australia’s richest mine. Today the mine is long gone but the lovely Queen Anne–style Bischoff Hotel dating back to 1902 offers visitors good low-cost accommodation in a charming old-world atmosphere. There’s a choice of queen ensuite or double rooms with shared bathrooms, with some rooms looking out over Waratah’s waterfall. The pub has a large dining room and log fires – welcome in this part of Tasmania at any time of year.
