Between raids by bushrangers and the skirmishes of the notorious Black War, Van Diemen’s Land in 1824, when these barracks were built, was far from the peaceful place it is today. They are the oldest buildings in Sorell and have been so carefully restored that spending time here is like slipping back two centuries. The upstairs suites with pitched ceilings just above head height are reached via a narrow staircase, and every room is such a treasure trove of period antiques, ornaments and knick-knacks it feels as if you have passed through a time portal. There’s a nice barbecue area where guests can get together, while the gardens have plenty of private nooks perfect for time alone.
