Lune River Cottage
This little weatherboard house in out-of-the-way Lune River is a perfect base from which to poke around this fascinating corner of Tasmania. The cottage has three standard budget rooms with shared bathrooms and tea- and coffee-making facilities, and there’s a playground to keep the kids occupied. Venturing further south from here takes you to remote Recherche Bay and finally – at the end of the road – Cockle Creek. Beyond there, you’ll need to continue on foot along the South Coast Track if you want to see more of this wild southern coast. Deep in the area’s magnificent forests there are caves to visit, thermal springs to take a dip in and wonderful gemstones and rare fossilised ferns to see at Lune River’s nearby museum.
