Macquarie Harbour – Strahan

Macquarie Harbour is Australia’s second largest harbour after Port Phillip in Melbourne. The opening out to the Southern Ocean is a dangerously narrow 120 metres, appropriately dubbed Hells Gates. Thickly forested hills slip into the water and are often cloaked in mist. Boat cruises lead down the harbour to the Gordon River, first looping up to Hells Gates and later stopping at Sarah Island, an old prison for convicts. At Heritage Landing, disembark for a wander through the rainforest and inspect a fallen 2000-year-old Huon pine. Otherwise, you can take to the harbour in a kayak and explore the bays and headlands at your own pace.
